Lauer is the latest high-profile person in the media to lose his job in a swift manner. He joins fellow morning show host Charlie Rose, who was fired from CBS last month. But while Rose might have retired soon, Lauer still has plenty of working years ahead of him.
For the moment, Lauer does not appear to be seeking new employment. In his apology statement, he promised that he would spend the immediate future working on himself.
"Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full time job," he said in part. "The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It's been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace."
But if Matt Lauer wants to continue his lavish lifestyle, he may not be ready to retire just yet. While he is reportedly seeking to recoup the remaining $30 million on his NBC contract, CNN reports he likely will not receive the money because he had a morality clause in his deal.
Perhaps surprisingly Lauer still has plenty of friends at NBC. "I can’t even describe how beloved he is at the show," one Today source told People. "He is so kind and respectful. In 20 years, I’ve never heard him raise his voice ever. He never gets angry. He is always a voice of reason and so kind to everyone and funny."
Still, in the current environment, with so many sexual harassment allegations at the forefront of the news, it is hard to envision anyone taking a chance on Lauer. And new stories about him continue to surface. Just days after the firing, two other women came to NBC with new allegations against Lauer. And there have been reports that Lauer initially denied the accusations against him instead of admitting his wrongdoing immediately.
Lauer has enough clout and contacts, though, that he could start his own production company or consulting firm. It's clear that no one will want to see him in front of the camera for a long time. But creating his own company isn't out of the question.
