The Best Performance by an Actress in a Comedy or Musical category at the 2018 Golden Globes featured legendary actresses and some of Hollywood's biggest stars. But Saoirse Ronan beat out Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Emma Stone, and Margot Robbie for the top prize.

Ronan literally thanked the entire room when she won her big award. She even made sure her mom was on FaceTime to watch the whole speech!

Ronan came into the Golden Globes as the heavy favorite in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category. Ronan, a three-time Globe nominee, earned critical praise for her role as the titular teenager in Lady Bird. She is one of the favorites at this year's Oscars, as well.

WAS SETH MEYERS HILARIOUS OR HORRIBLE WITH HIS GLOBES OPENING MONOLOGUE?

"What I knew would be so exciting about playing her, and what was also really scary about playing her, is that she’s sort of trying on all these different roles, to see which one fits best," Ronan told Variety of her character. "One minute she’s the showman onstage, and the next she’s the adoring girlfriend, and the next she’s the girl who’s going to pipe up in school. She’s testing them all out. She’s testing herself all the time."

THE HISTORY OF THE #WHYWEWEARBLACK MOVEMENT ...

If anyone was going to pull the upset at the Globes, it probably would have been Margot Robbie. She learned how to ice skate for the lead role in the Tonya Harding biopic, I, Tonya. She also had to play the same character over a 30-year time span.

"I watched for about six months every single thing, every bit of skating, every bit of interview, every documentary, I played it my iPod at night," Robbie told Rolling Stone of her preparation for the role. "I had her face, like, painted on the inside of my eyelids and her voice just constantly in my head."

Of course, Emma Stone is also a critical darling. And she gave another stellar performance as Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes. So some were pulling for her to take home the Golden Globe.

WHY EVERYONE IS WEARING BLACK AT THE GOLDEN GLOBES ...

While Dench and Mirren were also underdogs heading into the Globes, they have been favorites of the Hollywood Foreign Press for a long time. Dench, who was nominated this year for her role as the titular queen in Victoria & Abdul,  has 12 career nominations, while The Leisure Seeker star Helen Mirren has 15. Going into this year's ceremony, they each had only two and three wins, respectively.
